The dharna in this connection held in Kollam in front of the Postal Superintendent’s office was inaugurated by the Rajya Sabha member K.N. Balagopal, who is also the district secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
In his address, Mr. Balagopal said the Union government was deliberately creating problems in the long established service and wage conditions for employees in both the organised and unorganised sectors.
The contract system being widely implemented had reduced salaries by half.
He said it is unfortunate that even after so many years the GDS employees were not recognised as Central government employees.
These employees had not been covered by the pay commission as a result. Stronger agitations against the discrimination were required, he said.
Central Government Pensioners Association State vice president N.C. Pillai; BSNL Employees Union district secretary Muraleedharan Pillai; NGO Union leader Susheela; and NFE leaders Mathews Mathew, Abdul Nazar, Sali George and Mohanan Pillai led the dharna in which more than a hundred postal employees took part.
