Scheme for girl child pulls thousands to post offices

CHENNAI: Huge crowds were witnessed in many post offices across the city on Monday as people scrambled to open Sukanya Samriddhi accounts (called Selvamagal Semipu Kanaku in Tamil Nadu) for their daughters on the last day of the financial year.

Of the 3.96 lakh accounts opened in the Tamil Nadu postal circle since the launch of the scheme in January, the highest in the country, 1.49 lakh accounts (56 crore in deposits) were in Chennai, postmaster general Mervin Alexander told TOI.

Pointing out that the scheme has evoked a massive response and that there had been a steady stream of visitors to post offices across the city, including in suburban areas such as Tambaram, over the past few days, Alexander said 14,000 such accounts were opened in the city on Sunday alone.
He said the Tamil Nadu Postal circle had targeted schools and anganwadi centres to promote the scheme, launched exclusively for girl children by the Centre.

Most of those who thronged the Anna Road head post office on Monday said they were drawn by the high interest offered. "I have two daughters and I feel an account opened for them under the scheme will benefit them for their higher studies," said Padma Nagarajan, who was waiting in the queue.
